BM in China

David Wellesley WesleyDavid Wellesley Wesley - Director

A desire to help young men and women achieve their fullest academic potential led to me founding the Independent Schools Show in 2006, now the world’s biggest open day. Through the show, I developed a passion for passing on my knowledge of our finest schools to the parents we help for Bonas MacFarlane. That spirit of innovation sits at the heart of what we do at BM, alongside a meticulous attention to detail and a desire to consistently go beyond the norm. As a director I am hugely proud of the team we have built and our shared vision to always deliver excellence. When away from work I spend time with my young family walking our whippet in Battersea Park, though can often be persuaded to escape to the Highlands for a few days salmon fishing…

Charles BonasCharles Bonas - Director

As a music scholar at Harrow and having studied history at Oriel College, Oxford, I’ve experienced first hand the trajectory of competitive tutorial based education. With a background in law and teaching, complimented by many years working as a tutor, teacher, and school university advisor, I’ve explored many facets of our schooling system. I have been a tutor and mentor since 1992 and now spend time when my one year old son permits, reading and commenting about education and .... with a range of education charities.

William PettyWilliam Petty - Director

My early work focussed on tutoring children with special needs, a time that revealed the profound effect carefully tailored tutoring can have on a child’s education. As director of tuition at Bonas MacFarlane, I oversaw the recruiting and training of some of London’s most sought after tutors, and having since been made a co-director I feel more passionate than ever about the independent sector and the dynamic role it plays in shaping the next generation. I spend as much time as possible with my family enjoying some of London’s fantastic green spaces.

Lucy FletcherLucy Fletcher - Director and Schools Placement Director

The independent sector can be daunting, and I have spent my career building dynamic relationships with school all over the UK, so that I can best guide families through the complex application process. As a director of Bonas Macfarlane, I feel passionate about ensuring that we work to maintain the highest of standards. My understanding of individual school requirements and their procedures, alongside our unparalleled relationships with their admissions teams, means we can advise on which school is the right fit for each child, according to the unique criteria of each family. When I’m not working I love to go riding in the peace of Windsor Great Park or cook for friends with some of the more unusual recipes I’ve collected on my travels.

Harry CobbHarry Cobb - Director of Tuition

Starting life at the Dragon then Stowe, I have been fortunate to have first hand experience of independent sector. My years as a residential private tutor, including two years spent in Kazakhstan, gave me insight into the creative potential of one-to-one education. I have now been here for four years as Director of Tuition, advising families and assisting tutors as we work to develop our pupil’s character beyond the confines of the school curriculum. I keep myself fit with early morning swims in Brockwell Lido and training for triathlons.

Rachel RobertsRachel Roberts - Tutor Placement Manager

As head of house at Bradfield, I realised early on the immense satisfaction that comes from mentoring younger students. I am lucky enough to continue doing that in my work with Bonas MacFarlane. I like to balance my work in the independent sector with volunteer tutoring, helping to close the gap in educational inequality here in the UK. I am also a trained English langauge teacher. Outside of work I enjoy reading and talking about my love of the Welsh hills.

Mary CrichtonMary Crichton - Tutor Placement Consultant

With time spent working as a teaching assistant at Eaton Square School and experience as both a tutor and a tutee, I understand the need for lessons that are taught with wit and creativity, and the importance of finding the perfect tutor for each child. Away from work I play tennis and netball in my local park and enjoy ranking Europe's best petrol stations on road trips with friends.

Georgina JenningsGeorgina Jennings - Senior Account Manager

Education runs in my family. After a childhood living in a school where my father was headmaster, I can with confidence say that I understand school life inside out. Building strong relationships with clients and schools is at the heart of what I do, and these long-lasting connections pave the way for each client to begin their own unique relationship with their school of choice. I love living and working in leafy Battersea but on the weekends and head down to West Sussex.

Having worked in schools for several years, I'm enjoying working in a more relational aspect of education. My role at Bonas MacFarlane focuses on creating strong working relationships with our wide network of schools, colleges and universities. I help and support our families as they find their ideal placement and I love the satisfaction that comes with each successful offer. I spend weekends exploring London, having only recently moved here from Oxfordshire.

Nigel Hadden-PatonNigel Hadden-Paton - Senior Consultant

With 14 years as an officer in the Blues & Royals, I repeatedly witnessed the profound effect successful mentoring can have on young people’s lives. As a guardian to a number of young pupils, I specialise in the teaching of life skills, alongside those often ignored ‘soft’ skills that are so fundamental to successfully securing a job. With over 40 years of marriage and four fantastic children, I have been taught the importance of being able to communicate with people of all ages and have from all walks of life.

I came to Bonas Macfarlane in 2013, with the aim of building on my own experience of the English Schooling System (Millfield, Kings College University). With their guidance, my son received an academic scholarship for his senior boarding school. I administer the unique Bonas MacFarlane mentoring programmes. I love living in London and enjoy its parks as much as its fantastic restaurants.

Guy Schady-BeckettGuy Schady-Beckett - Head of Research

Prior to joining Bonas MacFarlane I spent fifteen years running a web design company that specialised in education. I joined Bonas MacFarlane so that I could help find new ways to enhance the company’s outstanding ability to reach students all over the world. As Head of Research I strive to improve our systems so that we can be sure we are offering the best possible service. Interests outside of work are history and sailing down in Cornwall.

James HigginsJames Higgins - Head of Studies

I joined Bonas Macfarlane after four years of teaching as a Head of Spanish and Head of year 10 and 11. I wanted to bring my knowledge of curriculum development and pastoral support to develop a program for students as they prepare for and apply to university. Seeing their progress in terms of their confidence, ability to express themselves and understanding of their subject area has been a privilege. Outside of work I am the Chair of Teach First’s South London Action Network and am engaged in many projects for the charity, while also writing a book on educational inequality. Beyond education, I have a passion for sport and am a devoted fan of Liverpool Football Club.

Laura SmettemLaura Smettem - Head of Communications

Educated at Oakham School with an academic and music scholarship, I consolidated my love of teaching while volunteering in India where I helped children in Tamil Nadu. After completing a degree in history from Exeter my interest in education made joining at Bonas Macfarlane in 2014 an obvious choice. I’ve never looked back and am now working hard to bring the message and ethos of Bonas Macfarlane out into the world as we develop further relationships and partnerships here in the UK and beyond. An interest in travel photography often finds me exploring new terrain with my beloved camera.

After starting my career at a contemporary Art centre in Kampala, Uganda, I swapped the steady sunshine for the excitement of English weather. My work involves designing and populating the Bonas Macfarlane Academy’s virtual learning environment, as well as training leading academics and tutors to lead online courses. It is an exciting role that incorporates my passion for educational technology along with the opportunity to make student engagement with their learning material as colourful and interesting as possible.

Having worked in various finance roles after leaving university, five years ago I joined Bonas MacFarlane. Since then I have been the sole finance officer and am proud to run a very busy but highly efficient department. Outside of work I like to refocus my gaze and take in as much of the world as possible through travelling, going to international arts festivals and spending time with an excellent group of friends.
