On an October evening, Thomas’s College held a drinks reception, offering an insightful glimpse into its future as a co-educational school in Richmond. Hosted by Principal and CEO Ben Thomas, the event was not just an introduction to the new college but also an opportunity for attendees to explore the college’s innovative approach to education.
The evening began with Ben Thomas introducing key staff, including Laura Cottrell, Director of Admissions and Marketing. Following the introductions, the attendees were divided into groups for guided tours of the campus, led by the Admissions team. I had the privilege of joining Charlotte Bowen, who provided an engaging narrative of the college’s history and its transition into a co-ed school. With its roots as a Methodist establishment and an American university, Thomas’s College’s unique historical context is a perfect complement to its modern, forward-thinking ethos.
The tour highlighted the exciting renovations currently underway, led by ID Architects. The focus is on preserving the Grade II listed building while also adapting it to meet the needs of a modern boarding school. With capacity for 50 boarders and a total student body of 650, the college is set to offer a dynamic and nurturing environment. The option for either weekly or flexible boarding further adds to the appeal for students looking for a blend of structure and independence.
Admissions and Assessments: A New Approach
A key focus of the evening was on the admissions process and the innovative changes Thomas’s College is introducing. Prospective students will undergo a holistic admissions procedure that allows flexibility for various standard assessments, including CAT4, ISEB/CEMs, or Godolphin & Latymer’s AAT. However, rather than requiring additional testing, the school will supplement these with its own written entrance exams and character assessments. This approach ensures that the admissions process is not only rigorous but also aligned with the individual strengths of each student.
For the upcoming academic year, families interested in 11+ and 13+ entry must submit their applications by Monday, November 4, 2024. Additionally, there is a unique 16+ entrance process, featuring a Viva Voce knowledge assessment, which requires students to present on a subject they are passionate about. This dynamic oral examination, paired with interviews and school references, showcases Thomas’s commitment to a holistic view of student potential. The college is also offering 100% scholarships for the 2025 cohort, an impressive commitment to accessibility and academic excellence.
Thomas’s Qualifications (TQs): A New Standard in Education
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the evening was the introduction of the new curriculum, which will launch in September 2025. Will le Fleming, in a passionate and engaging presentation, outlined Thomas’ College’s innovative curriculum, designed to offer students the freedom to forge their own educational path. A key element of this curriculum is the introduction of Thomas’s Qualifications (TQs), a departure from the traditional examination system.
TQs will allow students to choose from four distinct types of assessment: extended writing, creative artefact, informative exhibit, and public presentation. This flexibility not only caters to different learning styles but also emphasises the development of practical life skills. Thomas’ approach encourages students to discover their strengths and make choices that align with their future goals, fostering a deep sense of self-understanding from an early stage.
A Three-Year Sixth Form Programme
Another highlight of the new curriculum is the unique three-year Sixth Form programme. Integrating Year 11 into the Sixth Form experience, students will have the opportunity to take A-Levels, EPQs, and TQs, providing them with a comprehensive educational foundation ahead of university.
The Sixth Form experience at Thomas’s College is divided into Lower Sixth (Year 11), Middle Sixth (Year 12), and Upper Sixth (Year 13), allowing for a gradual transition into advanced studies. Students will have the flexibility to explore major and minor subjects, while the Thomas’s Core programme offers additional breadth through sports, volunteering, career development, and life skills.
The Future of Learning at Thomas’ College
The evening concluded with a sense of excitement about the future of Thomas’s College. The innovative curriculum, designed to nurture individual talents and encourage independent thinking, marks a significant shift from traditional educational models. By offering students practical and academic pathways, Thomas’s College is positioning itself as a leader in modern education.
This forward-thinking approach is sure to attract students who are eager to learn, explore their passions, and thrive in an environment that values both academic excellence and personal growth. With its first intake for the new curriculum set for September 2025, Thomas’s College is undoubtedly a school to watch in the coming years. As we look ahead to 2025, it’s clear that Thomas’s College is redefining what it means to educate and inspire the next generation of leaders.
