Introduction to travel writing
How to create atmosphere and evoke a sense of place
Historic / architectural writing.
This highly specialised short course is designed to enable students to bring together aspects of creative writing and factual reporting. Together we will examine the genre of travel writing, from medieval accounts of journeys on foot and by sea, to letters written by Byron and Shelley and Henry James about their time in Italy, to modern travel journalism in the FT and economist and adventure accounts by explorers and sailors. We will study the key building blocks necessary to create atmospheric and evocative travel writing and work to help students develop their individual style and unique voice. All this will come together to enable students to capture the places they have been on the page.
Session One: Introduction to travel writing. Here we look at the development of the travel writer, from its origins in historical adventure accounts to modern journalism /books. We will begin to discuss possible locations that you have visited that you would like to write about, and start to plan out an article.
Session Two: How to create atmosphere and evoke a sense of place - Sensory/atmospheric writing. Together we will explore and dissect how to use language that appeals to all the senses and creates a sense of place.
Session Three: Historic / architectural writing. In this session, we will learn how to weave the history of a place or region into your writing. We will delve deep into the history of your chosen location and also cover technical terms for the architecture of different periods / geographic features.
Session Four: Personal writing. Travel Writing is necessarily focused through the experience of the traveller. We will examine how to use your personal perspective as a lens to give detail/individuality to your writing.
Session Five: Editing. Together we will look through the piece of original travel writing that we planned together and informed during our earlier sessions. I will guide you through the editing process and give detailed feedback.
