The History of Philosophical Thinkers
The objective of this course is to help pupils better understand and independently present the main ideas of four key thinkers and to engage analytically with these ideas, demonstrated by debating key objections to them.
- Plato and the allegory of the cave: Truth and knowledge are objectives. They are accessed through education.
- Aristotle and Virtue Ethics: 'Eudaimonia' and pursuing the good life. If we practice good character and good behaviour this will help us become moral individuals and achieve the good life. Looking at the historical and contextual links between Plato and Aristotle.
- Kant and the Categorical Imperative: Deontology - actions in themselves are bad e.g. stealing is always bad.
- Bentham and Utilitarianism: Teleology – actions are bad if their consequences are bad. Actions that bring about pleasure are good, actions that bring about pain are
bad. Evaluating this in comparison with Kant’s theory.
