A Short History of Bonas MacFarlane

Since 1992, Bonas MacFarlane has quietly gone about doing something very unquiet: helping young people transform their lives through education.

We’ve never shouted the loudest. We’ve rarely advertised. But we’ve been the first, the most innovative, and the most consistent force behind one-to-one educational progress in the UK and far beyond.

Because behind every Oxbridge acceptance, every difficult transition eased, every inspired gap year, there’s a network of tutors, consultants, and families working together. And behind that, there’s a set of values, a philosophy that’s guided us for over 30 years.

What Makes Bonas MacFarlane Different?

Our model is built on personal relationships, not products. We don’t offer “packages” we offer people. Our tutors, consultants, and university mentors are selected not only for their academic prowess but for their capacity to connect, to listen, and to inspire.

Unlike most agencies, our founders speak with parents every day seven days a week and always have. We care deeply about outcomes, but we also care about the journey.

A Few Things You Might Not Know About Us

We’ve never been keen on listing achievements, but perhaps we should. Because over time, the Bonas MacFarlane story has become something quite extraordinary:

We helped the first Chinese student attend Eton, and the second girl into Harrow.

We were the first UK tutoring company to operate in Central Asia, and one of the earliest to build an on-the-ground presence in Dubai.

We’ve placed students at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Rice, not just coached, but walked with them through life-defining decisions.

We funded the construction and first year’s running of a village school, made entirely of bamboo.

We pioneered financial awareness courses for young private banking clients now standard in most institutions.

Our consultants have included former deans of admission from Harvard, Yale, and Stanford.

All of this has happened while staying true to one idea: education is about more than grades. It’s about self-knowledge, direction, and the freedom to think independently.

We Believe in Unusual Solutions

One of our proudest success stories involved a young student who was struggling to find his footing. He didn’t need another revision schedule he needed reinvention. We introduced him to a young, recently retired US Marine Corps sniper who happened to speak Japanese. They spent a year in Japan together. The result? That student went on to Georgetown University and now serves in the Household Cavalry.

We don’t offer that story as a blueprint. It’s simply an example of how seriously we take the individual path and how far we’re willing to go.

University Preparation Isn’t a Last-Minute Decision

The truth is, the road to university begins long before UCAS deadlines or SAT bootcamps. It starts in Year 9, or even earlier, when students begin to form ambitions or need help forming them.

That’s why we’ve invested so heavily in university preparation: funding hundreds of one-to-one sessions for students from underprivileged backgrounds, building entire courses from scratch, and bringing in the best minds from both sides of the Atlantic.

We’re proud to say that our Oxbridge success rate is among the highest in the country but we’re even prouder of the journeys that brought students there.

Tutors as Advocates, Not Just Instructors

We believe that every member of our team from tutors to senior consultants has a part to play in building the Bonas MacFarlane story.

We encourage our tutors to build their own “self-brands,” just like barristers or artists. Some of our most successful educators have gone on to lead schools, found companies, or remain lifelong mentors to the families they first worked with through us.

This is a network, not a service. It’s a community, not a commodity.

Looking Ahead

Today, Bonas MacFarlane is still evolving. We’re building a wider European network, mentoring young musicians and athletes, supporting homeschooling Olympians, and advising families in every corner of the world.

But at our core, we’re still what we’ve always been: a team of people who care deeply about what education can do.

If you’re new to Bonas MacFarlane, welcome. And if you’re part of the family already, thank you. We’re just getting started.
