Background to Fast Effective Reading – why the need?
This course should be considered by every student wishing to maximise their study time. We are taught to read only once in our lives around age 5 and 6 but nothing beyond. Yet we are all capable of advancing our reading skills to much higher levels. Instead, we pick up bad habits, both physical and mental, limiting our potential. The course addresses these habits to replace them with more effective ones. It is proven to be suitable for those with dyslexia. There are two parts to the course, as follows:
PART 1
- The physical process of reading – “making your eyes work better”
- Overcome current bad reading habits
- Controlling regressions (re-reading words, sentences and paragraphs)
- Progress beyond reading one word at a time
- Controlling sub-vocalisation – the internal voice
PART 2
- The mental process of reading – “making your brain work better” How to concentrate better
- Practical ways to concentrate better for longer
- How to understand and absorb more
- Effective previewing and skimming techniques; using the “PASS” routine
- Key purposes for reading, and how they should affect the pace of reading
- How to remember more; how and when to take effective notes
- Why our memory often fails us – what to do to retain more; using the 3R’s
- Effective revision using the PQ3R system
Applying the skills after the course
Each individual’s reading speeds and comprehension levels are measured at the start and frequently throughout the course, so as to monitor changes, and ensure correct speeds are used for maximum comprehension. No scores are ever divulged.
